Intrexon acquired Oxitec in 2015 for $160 million.
Oxitec is an Oxford University spin-out founded in 2002 to develop genetically engineered insects as an alternative to chemical pesticides. Its core technology produces self-limiting male insects that mate with wild females; their offspring don’t survive to adulthood, causing the target population to reduce. Because only the specific pest species is affected, the approach avoids the broader ecological damage associated with insecticide use.
